DANCE STYLE DESCRIPTIONS
Ballet
Ballet is the most influential, foundational, and recognizable style of dance. It is characterized by strength, grace, balance, precision, and discipline. Dancers develop correct posture, conditioning, flexibility, and strength, as well as learning the terminology associated with this style of dance. All dancers are encouraged to attend Ballet classes because it is the core foundation for all other styles of dance.
Hip Hop
Hip Hop is a dynamic, high-energy style of dance that was popularized by street dance crews in New York City and Los Angeles. Dancers learn a variety of popular movements and combinations featured in music videos and television shows including So You Think You Can Dance. The tempo of Hip Hop improves coordination, boosts endurance and fosters self-confidence.
Musical Theater
Musical Theater combines singing, dancing, and acting. Musical Theater productions are often referred to as “musicals”. Dancers learn choreography developed by our talented and experienced instructors as well as choreography from well-known Broadway shows. A Chorus Line, West Side Story, Annie, Hairspray, and Chicago are some of the shows dancers have studied in the past. Dancers will also learn fun acting exercises, such as improvisation, which helps dancers develop confidence, creativity, and self-awareness.
Contemporary
Contemporary is a creative, expressive, and unique style of dance. Dancers develop technically and creatively. Choreography is designed to strengthen technique, fine tune the body, and cultivate each dancer’s passion through self-expression and artistic movement.
Jazz
Regularly featured in movies, television shows, music videos and commercials, Jazz is one of the most popular styles of dance. It is a high energy, expressive style that encourages individuality and personality. Dancers develop a strong Jazz technique. They learn intricate choreography, leaps, jumps, turns, across the floor progressions, and stylized movements. Ballet and Contemporary complement Jazz because of its strong technique. Dancers are strongly encouraged to attend classes in all three styles.
Tap
Tap dancers create beautiful rhythms using various combinations, and for that reason, Tap is often considered a form of music in addition to a style of dance. Dancers will learn Broadway/musical theater tap including a variety of steps and combinations. Due to its complexity, Tap fosters concentration and muscle memory. It also improves flexibility, rhythm, timing, and coordination. Tap shoes are required.
